Kanana Muthomi was in a class of her own as she won the girls 11-12 years old category at the US Kids Local Tour tournament played at the Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club.
In a field of 15 players, Kanana had an impressive score of 73, 15 shots clear of second-placed Nkini Pasha who scored 88 points.
There was a three-way tie for third position with Bianca Dave, Simaloi Mbeya and Sophia Nesbitt scoring 90 points.
“Well, it was fine; first nine was really good, I was two under in the first nine but the second nine was quite tough. I ended up making a few bogeys and doubles (bogeys) and ended up playing one over. My target was to play in the 60s, but I started being too aggressive with my birdie putts and I ended up making bogeys,” said Kanana after the 18th hole.
The boys 11 year category was the only competition decided via a playoff after Aarin Wabwire and Gitonga Gitobu tied on 84 points. Wabwire was calm in the playoff to beat Gitobu in the first playoff hole.
“It was a good day, I didn’t play well on some holes but overall I played good. It was just careless mistakes that I made,” said Wabwire.
Wabwire said he was scared of the playoff because Gitinga is a very good opponent who is playing well. He claims he won by sheer luck.
On his play in the playoff, he said “first shot was well, I was confident, second shot I went on the green, but when I saw my opponent was close to me I got a bit scared. Third shot was not a good putt, but the fourth shot it went in.”
Shuhan Peng finished third, three shots behind Wabwire and Gitobu.
In the boys 9 years category, Niam Shah had the best score of the day shooting 35 points to emerge the winner. Ishaan Patel was second on 39 points, then 45 points saw a three-way tie third between Mikhail Ladak, Jerome Njiguna and Nick Njoroge.
