Equitel subscribers can now access 5G network in 370 locations spread across the country.

This follows the rollout of the network by the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) in collaboration with their host mobile network operator, Airtel Kenya.

Equitel which is owned by Equity Bank through its financial technology company Finserve becomes the first MVNO to offer 5G network in the country.

“This milestone will ensure faster and more reliable connectivity that empowers businesses, communities, and individuals, enabling them to actively engage in the digital economy,” said the firm.

Riding on Airtel Kenya infrastructure, Equitel targets to build on previous partnership to offer customers faster and reliable internet connectivity.

The 5G network is now available in among other regions, Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Athi River, Kisumu, Kakamega, Siaya, Eldoret, and Bungoma.

“In collaboration with the partner network, the 5G service will soon be extended to densely populated areas like residential neighborhoods, shopping centres and central business districts.”

Latest data by the Communications Authority indicates that out of the 34.6 million mobile broadband subscribers in Kenya, 10.2 million are on 3G network, 23.9 million are on 4G while 509,737 are using 5G.

Equitel becomes the first MVNO and the fourth mobile service provider after Safaricom, Airtel Kenya and Telkom Kenya to offer 5G network.

The 5G network rollout by the telco is expected to strengthen its mobile broadband market share where it controls 1.6pc of the market, compared to Safaricom’s 61.9pc, Airtel with 32.7pc, Telkom Kenya 2.5pc and Jamii Telecom with 1.3pc.

The firm currently has 1.5 million SIM subscriptions, equivalent to 2.2pc of the total subscriptions which stands at 65.9 million.

To enjoy Equitel 5G services, customers need to have a 5G capable device supported by a 4G-LTE SIM card.
