The number of Kenyan YouTube Shorts content creators earning more than Ksh 100,000 in revenue has grown by 25pc since December 2022, the second fastest in the continent.
According to Google Africa, South African registered the highest jump in Shorts channels generating Ksh 100,000 or more in revenue at 30pc year over year as of December 2022, while Nigerian channels recorded a 15pc growth in revenue.
The growth in revenue earnings is attributed to “Made for You” program launched by the tech giant in December last year to equip African creators with the skills needed for effective short-form content creation.
The program which has supported at least 2,200 creators from Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, with a focus on maximising the creative potential of YouTube Shorts also helped content creators on the platform to refine their craft and maximize their impact within the digital landscape.
“The “Made for You” program provides support to African creators to learn the skills to better utilise YouTube Shorts to its full potential. By offering training, mentorship, and a supportive community, the program aims to empower creators to contribute significantly to Africa’s creative economy,” said Google.
In Kenya, creator community has also seen a 35pc year-over-year increase in channels surpassing 10,000 subscribers while there was a rise in channels exceeding one million subscribers by over 110pc year-over-year signifying Kenya’s burgeoning influence.
Nigeria reported a 40pc year-over-year increase in channels achieving more than 10,000 subscribers as channels with over one million subscribers grew 50pc during the period.
South Africa on the other hand had over 300 channels with more than 100,000 subscribers, marking a 60pc increase year over year, highlighting the vibrant creative scene.
“The notable growth of over 30% year over year in channels with more than 1M subscribers underscores South Africa’s significant influence on the global stage.”
This year, 882 creators graduated and are now integrated into the official Shorts community under the guidance of Community Partnership Managers (CPMs).
