The government has confirmed that renovations at the Moi International Sports Centre will be completed in time for Kenya to host the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Principal Secretary for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, says the stadium will be ready by April 30, 2025.

Speaking when he appeared before the Regional Integration Committee chaired by Nominated MP Irene Mayaka, PS Mwangi said Kenya is also preparing to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

He assured Members of Parliament that infrastructure upgrades are on schedule, with key organizational structures already in place to oversee the projects.

“”The Ministry, in collaboration with the National Treasury, has already facilitated the timely payment of $13 million being Kenya’s payment for hosting fees,” he said.

PS Mwangi confirmed that both Moi International Sports Centre and Nyayo National Stadium will be ready to host CHAN matches, while several other stadiums have been identified as training grounds for the AFCON tournament. These include Kasarani Annex, Kirigiti Stadium, and Ulinzi Sports Complex.

He revealed that the three co-hosting nations—Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania—have appointed Local Organizing Committees (LOCs) to coordinate the planning and execution of both CHAN and AFCON.

Mwangi further stated that Kenya has been placed in Group A, alongside Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia. He said this grouping was influenced by strict CAF requirements such as proximity to international airports, the availability of five-star hotels, and access to major referral hospitals.
