The public arrested a police officer attached to a special unit over claims he attempted to rob an M-Pesa agent of cash in Mathare slums, Nairobi.

A mob arrested and disarmed the officer attached to a special unit in Mandera and handed him over to authorities following the failed robbery on May 24 at night.

An M-Pesa agent told police the officer had asked to withdraw Sh36,000 and later drew a pistol, demanding the cash even though he had not transacted the same as asked.

The agent told the gunman she had not seen the withdrawal message, which prompted him to draw a Ceska pistol at her.

According to police, she screamed for help and locals responded there prompting the officer to escape the scene.

The mob pursued him until a point he surrendered and told them he was a police officer.

The mob disarmed him of his pistol, which had eight bullets and took him to a local police station for processing.

Police said they are investigating the incident. They want to establish how the officer left his workstation in Mandera to Nairobi where the alleged incident happened.

Cases where police are involved in crime have been reported amid efforts to contain the trend internally.

Police say they have internal mechanisms to address the cases and all that have been reported are being handled or have been solved.

In some of the cases, the officers are found to be nursing trauma due to various factors, including poor working conditions and exposure to traumatic issues.

Meanwhile, two police officers were injured after they fell from a moving motorcycle in Kabianga, Kericho County.

The two had arrested a defilement suspect and were taking him back to the station when they fell off the motorcycle they were riding on.

One of the officers sustained an injury in the hand while the other, a female one had injuries in the hand knuckles, police said.

They were both treated and discharged from a local clinic, police said.
